A frequently asked question by reporters and citizens is whether they need to use a specific form to submit a freedom of information request to state government.
The answer is no. There is no requirement in Montana state law for the use of a specific form. But if you need to see an example of how to write an FOI request letter, you can find samples on the National Freedom of Information Coalition. This section also has sample letters for every state government, including Montana.

Montana’s Constitution says, “No person shall be deprived of the right to examine documents or to observe the deliberation of all public bodies or agencies of state government and its subdivisions, except in cases in which the demand of individual privacy clearly exceeds the merits of public disclosure.”
